Although country stars generally do not write their own songs, the songs they choose from the Nashville publishing houses reveal something about the musical personas they are trying to project, even if all they say is, "I want to have a hit." Julie Roberts actually participated in the writing of four of the songs on her second album, not having had any creative input into its predecessor. But whether she is picking from the available demos or forging her own efforts with the help of others, it's clear what she is trying to project: heartbreak. She is the first to admit this, noting in the press biography accompanying advance copies of Men & Mascara, "I enjoy writing sad songs. If somebody brings in a happy idea, I like them if they are not too, too happy. Sometimes I'll say, 'That is just too happy for me.'" Roberts' tendency toward the dark side jibes well with her vocal quality, which has a torn, ragged, emotional edge that underscores the unhappiness in the lyrics. Her affinity for emotional turmoil is what causes the comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Shelby Lynne instead of the sweet Faith Hill or the rowdy Gretchen Wilson, and gives her appeal beyond Nashville. And she plays to that affinity over and over on Men & Mascara, which certainly doesn't contain any songs that are too, too happy. Even when something positive is being described, as in "Smile" and "Too Damn Young," there is more than a suggestion of trouble. And the rest of the time, trouble is the main topic of conversation, as Roberts sings - in the voices of women who are romantically obsessed - to and about men who aren't worthy of them. "Men and mascara always run," she notes in the title song, and that's pretty much the way that the male sex is portrayed in song after song; "She was looking for love, he was looking for fun" is the song's other key line. Even realizing this, Roberts' women can't help themselves. The best they can do is to try to resist taking up with married men until they're sure they've left their wives ("A Bridge That's Burning") or try to escape a bad relationship by leaving town for parts unknown ("First to Never Know"). The only apparently worthy lover is the absent one in the heartrending album closer, "All I Want Is You," and the conditional verb tense ("Everyone says, 'Move on'/That is what you would want") suggests that he may have left the singer a widow. If all of this sounds like old fashioned female victim music, Roberts invests these women with dignity amidst their troubles and, forced to sing powerfully over producer Byron Gallimore's aggressive arrangements and loud music mix, she gives them a toughness, no matter how dire their circumstances. The result is a Nashville country album that transcends the usual cliches to a remarkable extent. -- Review by William Ruhlmann --

ABOUT DAVE'S TRUE STORY
Dave's True Story is a jazzy pop combo featuring Dave Cantor's intelligent, sometimes quirky lyrics, Kelly Flint's smooth-as-silk vocals and Jeff Eyrich's acoustic upright bass laying a solid rhythm track beneath it all. They have built an impressive body of accomplishments since their formation in 1994. Winners of the 1995 Kerrville New Music Award as well as numerous and various other surprising accomplishments, they have performed nationally and internationally to wide critical and commercial acclaim.
Dave and Kelly met in 1989 through the Fast Folk group of songwriters. Chanteuse, Kelly Flint, a teenage Joni Mitchell freak turned twenty-something fan of Keely Smith and Lulu, had been singing backup around town and feeding her dreams as a waitress at the Cookery, an old cabaret where she befriended blues legend Alberta Hunter. David Cantor, a one-time student of the Berklee College of Music and an avid songwriter, started performing his offbeat jazzy songs at open-mics at places like the Speakeasy. Kelly and Dave passed each other like two ships in the night until a snowy evening in 1992 when they cemented their friendship over shots of Jack Daniels at the old Village Corner. Kelly proposed that Dave teach her a song and the rest, as they say, is history. Well, not quite. Jeff Eyrich signed on in 1998, bringing his upright bass and considerable production experience into the picture.
Dave's True Story is an independent band whose notoriety has been built mainly by word of mouth and hundreds of live shows.
DAVE'S TRUE STORY BIOGRAPHY
Dave's True Story's smart, sexy sound blows a cool breeze through the world in which we live with its fourth release, NATURE.
Like all great art, Dave's True Story stands outside of its era, with a sensibility that encompasses the past, lives in the present, and hints at the future. The New York City group utilizes a stylish, elegant jazz/pop sound that contrasts the thorny thickets of songwriter/guitarist Dave Cantor's deliciously devilish lyrics. DTS's resident siren, Kelly Flint, coos former playwright Cantor's crafty, acerbic missives as if they were tender messages of love, but songs about psychic readings, beatnik posers, and prescription medication are seldom the stuff of late-night saloon songs.
Over the course of three albums, enough people have noticed Dave's True Story for the band to sell over 50,000 records without the benefit of a major label or big press machine. Instead they've been winning hearts and minds in a more subversive, covert manner, flying under the big boys' radar even as they've been lauded everywhere from the NY Times to CNN and had their songs included in the feature film KISSING JESSICA STEIN. With the help of DTS bassist and producer Jeff Eyrich, however, the group's hush-hush hipster renown seems likely to expand to a bigger slice of the pie, via the latest Dave's True Story disc, NATURE.
In a world primed for sophisticated, jazzy pop by the likes of Norah Jones and Diana Krall, Dave's True Story injects the crucial element of sharply observed irony with NATURE's batch of mordant, masterfully crafted tunes, from "World in Which We Live," where global ennui is wedded to a sinuous bossa nova beat, to "I Lost my Nature," in which the lovelorn protagonist searches for missing mojo against bongo-driven Beat-era jazz grooves. While previous albums featured more upbeat, swinging arrangements, NATURE finds Dave's True Story playing it cool, letting Cantor's songs, Flint's voice, and Eyrich's sterling sonic framework tell the story of a sensibility too sharp for mere "lounge" chic but too top-shelf to be crammed into a rock & roll pigeonhole.
So when the Wall Street Journal observes that "Harry Connick Jr. and John Pizzarelli should have new material that's as witty as what Mr. Cantor creates," they're not consigning Dave's True Story to an Adult Contemporary niche market, they're simply wracking their brains for artists with enough old-school spit and polish to do justice to the sparkle of a sound that's at once postmodern and timeless. With the release of NATURE, though, it's likely that admirers will stop vainly searching for comparisons and simply mark Dave's True Story as sui generis, a musical island unto themselves, offering a shrewd, sometimes salacious, but strangely luxurious escape from the banal world of mainstream pop music.

For Michael Buble, 2003 was a whirlwind year that included the release of his successful debut album, an international tour, a Christmas EP, and tons of promotional appearances and press interviews. Therefore, it is not surprising that, in lieu of a proper follow-up, Bublй has elected to keep his fan base happy with Come Fly With Me, a CD/DVD combo package that features live performances from several of his tour dates along with two new studio tracks. The DVD is the more interesting of the two discs, as it gives a glimpse into the fast-paced world of a rising star, combining musical numbers and candid footage shot during the tour. Bublй is seen vivaciously performing with his band while snippets of behind-the-scenes interviews act as interludes between the songs. The brief moments provide a little background history and make him out to be an average guy who was blessed with talent and enjoys what he is doing. Although it is nice to get a feel for the person, what is most important is the music, and he more than proves that he is both an excellent vocalist and entertainer. He sounds great, the band is hot, and Buble appears to genuinely love performing for an audience. However, the editing of the musical footage is a major distraction. Although the audio track sounds as if it came from one uncut song performance, the visuals are made up of several filmed concerts and are spliced together in a rather jarring fashion. Every two to three seconds a different shot of Buble singing a song is edited in (often in layers), but the specific shot onscreen may not be from the same performance as the recorded concert audio. Therefore, there are times when the visuals don't match the audio track (much like a foreign film dub). While this technique may be interesting and thematic for the opening title track, it quickly becomes annoying when done for over an hour. The CD includes live versions of six songs featured on the DVD along with two new studio tracks produced by David Foster. "Nice 'n Easy" is just like its title, as Bublй sings with a relaxed swagger that charms the listener, but "Can't Help Falling in Love" suffers from a schmaltzy Foster arrangement that Buble tries his best to overcome. The song sounds even worse when followed by a brilliant live rendition of "My Funny Valentine." Although the DVD may be more enjoyable if played with the television off, Come Fly With Me has enough excellent musical moments to keep fans tuned in to Buble's one-man revival of standards. -- Review by Aaron Latham --

George Clooney's 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck is set in New York City during the '50s, and the director decided the right music to go with the black-and-white cinematography was jazz. More specifically, current recordings from vocalist Dianne Reeves and a small combo featuring some silky smooth tenor and alto sax from Matt Catingub, Peter Martin on piano, and Jeff Hamilton on drums with Robert Hurst and Christoph Luty splitting bass duties. The tunes are mostly classic ballads and smoky standards (all picked by Clooney) that Reeves and the group handle with a satisfyingly light touch. She gives the songs plenty of emotion but never over-sings, lending the recording a very intimate feel. Also helping with that is the sound of the album as it's free from any modern studio trickery or gloss; in fact, much of the music on the soundtrack was recorded live during the shooting of the movie. Had Clooney chosen songs actually recorded in the '50s, the soundtrack may have been more authentic, but Reeves and her group do a commendable job of re-creating the simple and sentimental sound of the era's mainstream vocal jazz. -- Review by Tim Sendra --
