Japanese keyboard sensation Hiromi Uehara is a recent graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but there's already a great deal that she could teach those in the music world whose ears and minds remain open. Spiral, scheduled for a January 17, 2006, release on Telarc, offers a glimpse into the highly creative inner world of a gifted young pianist/composer whose roots are in jazz but whose potential is unlimited. Mentored by giants like Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and Chick Corea, Hiromi turns tradition on its head and plunges into a universe of new ideas where others of her generation have barely scratched the surface.
Spiral is the highly anticipated follow-up to Brain, Hiromi's 2004 album, which received outstanding reviews from the jazz press and was supported by extensive touring on three continents.
Committed to making her music evolve, Hiromi offers eight original, category-bashing compositions in a trio format that fuses elements of jazz, pop, classical and avant-garde into a deceptively intense listening experience. "With this album, I have a really strong vision which I call 'three-piece orchestral music,'" Hiromi says. "Exploring what I could do with the trio, I decided to focus on this setting."
Self-assured beyond her years, Spiral is another brilliant showcase for the pianist's imaginative compositions and thunderous playing. Produced by Hiromi and Michael Bishop, this third Telarc release was recorded and mixed at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, in May and June 2005. The album includes fellow Berklee-bred musicians Tony Grey on bass and Martin Valihora on drums.
Hiromi presents her new and personal musical language on the opening track, "Spiral," alternating between improvisation and carefully crafted modern jazz. The album's centerpiece, "Music for Three-Piece Orchestra," goes beyond expectations, featuring a suite of four tracks - "Open Door - Tuning - Prologue," "Deja Vu," "Reverse," and "Edge" - that spotlight Hiromi's formidable technique and impressive compositional skills.
A painting provided an inspirational starting point for "Old Castle, by the river, in the middle of a forest," while "Love and Laughter" is dedicated to Ahmad Jamal. Channeling Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan (two huge influences), Hiromi unleashes her nearly demonic energy on the bonus track, "Return of Kung-Fu World Champion."
Although the piano prodigy has a growing reputation in the United States, Hiromi is already a star in her native Japan. Her 2003 Telarc debut, Another Mind - produced by Ahmad Jamal - shipped gold in Japan (100,000 units) and won the Recording Industry Association of Japan's (RIAJ) "Jazz Album of the Year" Award. Her 2004 release, Brain, received Swing Journal's "New Star Award," Jazz Life's "Gold Album," HMV Japan's "Best Japanese Jazz Album," the Surround 2004 Horizon Award and the Japan Music Pen Club's "Japanese Artist Award." (The JMPC is a classical/jazz journalists club.) In 2004, Hiromi was featured on the covers of Jazziz, Billboard and Goldmine. More recently, Brain won "Album of the Year" in Swing Journal's 2005 Readers Poll.
Born in Shizuoka, Japan, in 1979, Hiromi discovered jazz when she took up the piano at age six. Within a year, she was a student of the Yamaha School of Music, whose progressive approach to musical training allowed the young student to tap into her emotions as well as mastering the technical aspects of writing and performing. At age 14, she went to Czechoslovakia and played with the Czech Philharmonic. When she was 17, Chick Corea invited her to perform with him. Hiromi came to the United States in 1999 and graduated from Berklee in 2004.
Spiral includes a limited edition bonus DVD with live footage of "Kung-Fu World Champion" from Brain, Hiromi's 2004 release. The DVD also features a DTS 96K high-resolution audio soundtrack - fully compatible with all existing DTS decoders - which offers an unprecedented level of audio quality for multi-channel sound on DVD-Video. Spiral will also be released as 5.1 Surround Sound SACD.
The release of Spiral puts Hiromi on a trajectory that continues to circle the entire jazz landscape and takes music to a higher place.

Проект был основан в 1994 году, но первый концерт состоялся только 16/03/1996 года. Кроме Anke Hachfeld и Maaf Kirchner в состав вошли флейтистка Katrin Beischer и перкуссионист Soyeren Meyer. Немецкие последователи Dead Can Dance стали известны публике благодаря концертам (в том числе и благодаря выступлениям на готических фестивалях) ещё до выхода их первого альбома. Диск 'Nova' вышел в 1997 году и ещё раз подтвердил - здесь есть всё, что надо для успеха - И исполнительское мастерство музыкантов, в том числе вокал Анке Хахфельд, и зрелость композиций. Второй альбом 'Elfensex' (2000), и два последующих сингла - 'SilverStar' (2001) и 'Maid of Orleans' (2002) -продемонстрировали движение к более мейнстримовой, легко воспринимаемой музыке. Последний на сегодняшний день полнометражный альбом 'Picnic On The Moon' (2003) - ещё одна веха на этом пути. Достаточно разнообразный в музыкальном отношении, он как губка впитал в себя различные направления современной музыки. Изначальные влияния Dead Can Dance смешались здесь с аллюзиями на Massive Atack и Kate Bush. Альбом, записан с участием Henning Rumenapp (также гитарист Guano Apes) и музыкантов (виолончелистов, скрипачей и перкуссионистов) также работавших с The Inchtabokatables и Deine Lakaien.

Madeleine Peyroux took significantly less time than the eight years between her debut and its follow-up to release her third album, Half the Perfect World, which finds a more mature - or at least less vulnerable - singer, one who chooses to express herself with nuance rather than overtness. Often, like in the opening "I'm All Right" - one of four original songs - this aversion to unconcealed emotion works well, playing off the swelling Hammond, the swinging rhythm of the acoustic guitar (contrasting nicely with the hook of "It's all right, I've been lonely before"), and the simple drums. But at other times, like in "A Little Bit" - which is bluesy and more upbeat and practically screams for an outburst, a growl, something - her hesitancy instead almost comes across as a flaw, as a fear of fully expressing herself. On "Blue Alert," where Anjani's voice was full and seductive, rife with curling smoke rings and lipstick-stained wineglasses, Peyroux seems desolate and flat and she simplifies the situation too much, though she does fare much better on the other Anjani/Leonard Cohen piece and title track of the album. Here, she changes its perspective, mixing the characters together and sounding beautifully fragile, yet at the same time strong and certain, as she sings about her love. The same can be said for her version of the Johnny Mercer-penned "The Summer Wind," which uses a cleaner, less dramatic arrangement to convey the feeling that, though she's thinking about past events with some nostalgia, she's also able to accept the outcome and move forward with her life. This kind of resignation hangs heavy throughout the entire album, making every song she covers seem sadder than the original. Joni Mitchell's "River," sung with k.d. lang, is slow and heart-wrenching (lang's voice, especially, brings a sweet melancholy to it), and Peyroux's version of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" has a kind of dejected resoluteness that makes you wonder if she can even follow the advice she's singing. This subtlety is two-fold, however. It's so prevalent in the music that it's hard to tell if it's hinting at greater depth or if it's really a protective blanket, an affected timidity to prevent exposure. The delicateness of Half the Perfect World is certainly nice, but Peyroux seems to be using it as a device to hide behind instead of an actual expression of feeling, and so while the album is an overall success, it still leaves questions lingering behind the softly clicking hi-hat, the wandering bass, of when the singer's really going to show herself completely. -- Review by Marisa Brown --
